5 key criteria for choosing hotel towels
GSM weight, cotton quality, weave density and wash durability — a detailed guide for hotel operators.
In hotel operations, the towel is the most sensitive touchpoint of a guest's perception of luxury. The wrong choice leads to both guest complaints and high replacement costs.
- GSM Weight: 450 GSM is economy, 550-600 GSM is the 5★ standard, 700 GSM is ultra-luxury. For suites, choose 600+.
- Cotton Type: Turkish cotton (medium-long staple) offers a strong quality/cost balance. Egyptian cotton (long staple) is ideal for the luxury segment.
- Weave Density: More densely woven fabrics are more durable but heavier. A balance is needed between guest comfort and operating cost.
- Wash Durability: Towels should be guaranteed for at least 200 wash cycles under industrial laundry conditions.
- Colour Fastness: A minimum grade of 4 according to ISO 105. Otherwise colours fade within 3 months.
